When it comes to protecting and styling textured hair, braids are one of the most fashionable options, while keeping it trendy at the same time. When it comes to braiding, a lot of care is required. A hair styling foam or a hair mousse for braids can be used to keep them looking sleek and fashionable. The question is, how can I find the best mousse for braids? Let’s find out now!!

In the past, when I was transitioning from chemically treated hair to natural, I braided my hair a lot. In a week after getting my braids in place, they would become very frizzy, and that would frustrate me to no end.

To my rescue, my hairstylist recommended a few mousse brands I had never heard of before and explained how to use these hair mousses on braids at home.

What is a Hair Mousse & its Benefits

Essentially hair mousse is nothing but a lightweight styling product with the feel and appearance of airy foam. It is also called hair styling foam for braids.

When you want something that isn’t going to weigh down your hair and reduce its volume, this is another great alternative to curling creams and oils. Using a lot of hair products is a big NO for braids, so a light, foamy mousse that makes hair look smooth and fluffy is an ideal way to change the appearance of braids.

After braiding your hair, your roots and edges can appear frizzy within a few days or weeks. Those hair are smoothed down to make your face look more polished.

A good mousse will also soothe irritated or itchy scalps after braiding, especially if one is complaining of tension from newly installed braids. When you apply the braiding foam, your scalp will thank you for the cooling effect provided after braiding your hair.

How to Maintain Braids with Mousse?

It is normal to notice some frizz after getting braids installed, especially near the top of your head a few days or weeks after getting them installed. Additionally, your braids might start to look lackluster and dull.

A light and foamy mousse is all you need to tame any stray hairs and to restore shine to your beautiful braids. It is very easy to use a mousse on your braids.

Steps for Applying Mousse to Braided Hair

  • Take some foam In your hands, and massage the roots, or you can spray it directly on the scalp and be more generous with it.
  • Having braids on for a long time may make your scalp itchy. If this is the case, you should opt for the latter.
  • After smoothing and patting the mousse across your head and roots, gently rake it down the braids’ length to ensure that it is spread evenly.
  • Hold your braids with care do not go rough on them- you don’t want those tiny curls peeking through the ends of your locks.
  • In the following steps, carefully put the braids into a bun or low ponytail after the product has melted into the hair and you do not see any white residue in your hair.
  • A silk scarf around your head will help prevent kinks from appearing in the braids.
  • You may want to let the mousse rest for 1-2 hours, or until it is completely dry.
  • Your braids will now appear fresh and wet once you take your hair out of the bun and gently remove the scarf.

How to Fix a Frizzy Box Braid at Night? or Why Dip Braids In Hot Water?

Wearing braids regularly, however, will probably require you to take proper precautions to take care of your messed up braids. When you wake up in the morning, what’s a great way to pick up your braids? “Some hot water”!!

Hair is generally considered to be damaged by hot water. This method for box braids has gained a few fans, as can be seen in the picture below.

The braid ends are sealed when they are dipped in hot water. The braids will therefore last longer as frizz prevents getting damaged at night. Shine is also enhanced by this method.

You do not want to use too much hot water on your hair. You can even burn your scalp if you are using the hot water too often. Use only a little water to braid your hair.

Steps How to Dip Braids in Hot Water

  • Braid your strands like you always do.
  • Make sure the container you use is heat-resistant and small to medium-sized..
  • Place towels around it so that you don’t spill over your workplace.
  • Take 1-2 cups of water and boil it.
  • Pour hot water into the container until it is 3/4 full.
  • Take your braids and dip them into the hot water.
  • Make sure your braids are completely dry.
  • Later trim your braids as needed.

Keep Braids Away From Frizzing/Messed up While Sleeping at Night

If you do not maintain or use certain products on your hair, your hair might fall out naturally. Nevertheless, how do you keep your hair braids together at night? Hair braids aren’t something you can just fix every couple of hours at night. Here are some recommended things to use to keep frizz hair away at night.

Pillowcases made of silk are recommended while sleeping.

It is healthy for your hair to sleep on a silk pillowcase, The silk pillowcase prevents tangles and frizzes unlike cotton. This is possible because the hair and pillowcase experience less friction.

Make sure you wear a satin bonnet for hair care.

Wearing a satin bonnet is another option. In this case, we’re talking about comfortable, luxurious bonnets to sleep in. Despite the cuteness factor, satin bonnets serve the same purpose as silk pillowcases.

Hair should be damp when sleeping.

Putting your hair in a damp state can help it to set better. Additionally, you don’t have to use heat, which means less damage to your hair. Hair should generally be brushed and braided while it is still dry. This way, there are fewer chances of breakage. Follow the below steps

  1. Make sure you wet your hair so the braids are damp.
  2. Depending on your preference, you can apply your known leave-in products or oils.
  3. Keeping your hair damp, as towel drying is ideal.

And now we are done!!! You can go to bed. Since it will air-dry overnight, the hair dryer is not necessary. However, you may not use a satin bonnet. Sleep with damp hair.

Additionally, if you feel like having curly or wavy hair the following morning, you can untie the braids. In this case, letting a few braids down would give you the best of both worlds.
